The Mapleview Public Library was like a sanctuary of silence, the air thick with the scent of old paper and polished wood. I sat at the large oak table surrounded by stacks of yearbooks and newspapers. Carla and Benny were already there, deep in conversation.

"Found anything interesting?" I asked as I flipped open an old yearbook from the pile on the table.

"Plenty." Benny adjusted his glasses. "There’s no shortage of drama in Mapleview High’s history."

Carla chuckled softly, running her fingers over a stack of yellowed newspapers. "That’s for sure. We’re looking for anything that stands out—scandals, notable events. Anything that might give us a lead."

I turned my attention back to the yearbook. The pages were filled with smiling faces frozen in time. “Let's start with the suspects. Carla, who do we have photos of from 1999?”

She handed me a few marked pages. “Here’s Walt Wendly and George Albertson from their senior year.”

I examined the pictures closely. Walt had that unmistakable charm—broad smile, confident stance. George looked more reserved but still had an air of authority around him.

I traced the lines of his portrait with my finger. “As I’ve mentioned many times, we need to learn the identity of this mystery woman.” I said. “I’m not sure why I’m fixated on her, but I sense she’s connected somehow.”

Benny shifted in his chair and then pulled out a notebook. "She might be. I’ve been looking at event photos with names from Cindy Mathers' time at school. I’m hoping to find a clue as to this woman’s identity there."

"Great idea." I returned to my yearbook.

A notification pinged on my phone—Eliza's text message coming through loud and clear despite her absence. Found something interesting online: Walt's name keeps popping up in local theater productions from back then.

I shared Eliza's findings with the group. Carla glanced up from her pile of newspapers. “Local theater? That could connect him to Lara Richards.”

Benny's eyes lit up. “Maybe Lara and Walt were friends from their involvement in theater.”

I jotted down some notes as we went through each yearbook page, listing club memberships, sports teams, and any social circles that seemed relevant.

“I wonder if there’s anything about those cast parties that might help us,” I thought out loud.

Carla rummaged through another stack of newspapers, pulling one out triumphantly. “Here’s an article about the high school’s drama club production from twenty-five years ago.”

“Perfect.” I leaned in closer as she spread it across the table.

As we read through it together, details began to emerge about post-performance parties held at various students' houses—events where lines could easily blur between friends and lovers.

Benny snapped a picture of the article with his phone for reference later. “We should investigate these parties more,” he suggested.

“Agreed.” A spark of determination lit within me again. “It’s time to dig deeper.”
